Statement from Minister Carolyn Bennett for the #IndigenousReads Holiday Campaign
Statement
OTTAWA, ONTARIO (December 1, 2019) — The Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Carolyn Bennett, issued the following statement today:
“The holiday season is an opportunity to connect with family and friends, and share ideas with loved ones with meaningful gifts. There is no better gift than a good book.
This month, I hope you will join me in gifting your loved ones – young and old – with a small act of reconciliation. Through the #IndigenousReads Holiday Campaign, we honour the voices of Indigenous authors as well as the rich diversity of Indigenous culture and history with book recommendations throughout the month of December. Reading books by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis authors can change our whole understanding of who we are as Canadians. A little understanding can go a long way in renewing the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians.
I invite you to let others know which books by Indigenous authors you or your children have enjoyed! Share your recommendations with Canadians from coast to coast to coast using #IndigenousReads.”
