Statement
Ottawa, Ontario (October 4, 2022) – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Crown−Indigenous Relations; the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services; the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs; and the Honourable Marci Ien, Minister Women and Gender Equality and Youth, issued the following statement today:
“Today is the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. This day reminds us all that we must continue to stand up in solidarity to prevent violence and create safer communities.
“On this day, we highlight the dedication and advocacy of First Nations, Inuit and Métis 2SLGBTQQIA+ families, survivors, communities, organizations, and leadership. Your work to get us to a National Inquiry, your contributions to the National Action Plan, and guidance for the Federal Pathway has been constant and unwavering. We hear you and we stand with you. Together, we will continue working to end this national crisis.
“Each year on October 4th, Sisters in Spirit vigils are held across the country to support families, survivors and communities of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. We encourage all Canadians to join an event in their local area and support families and survivors as they continue their work to commemorate their loved ones and work towards safer communities for everyone.”
