Minister Miller thanks Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) President Audrey Poitras
Statement
Ottawa, Ontario (June 15, 2023) — The Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations, Marc Miller, issued the following statement today:
“Today, Canada recognizes the accomplishments of President Audrey Poitras, whose role as the longest-serving president of the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) comes to a close following her announcement that she will not seek re-election this year.
Following her initial election in 1996, President Poitras became the first female president of the MNA. She has been an influential figure among Canada’s political leaders, and a role model for Métis women and girls. Throughout her 27-year career, President Poitras has been steadfast in championing the social, political, and economic interests of Métis in Alberta and working to improve the quality of life for Métis communities. President Poitras is a trailblazer, and her vision for the Rupertsland Institute and Métis Crossing will contribute to a strong and vibrant future for Métis citizens in Alberta for generations to come.
Her commitment to affirming Métis rights in Canada has guided her leadership over the last two decades, strengthening the MNA and its mandate. This commitment to the recognition of Métis rights and identity in Alberta has been made evident in the strong partnerships she has forged with Alberta and Canada, including the historic signing of a self-government agreement between Canada and the MNA under her leadership.
President Poitras has served the MNA members for over 20 years, which is indicative of her dedication to her constituents and her approach to leadership based on compassion and accountability. I would like to extend a sincere congratulations on an extraordinary and successful career and wish her nothing but the best.”
