Archived - Minister Morneau Tells Toronto Global Forum That Canada Is Ahead of the Curve on Global Push Toward Inclusive Growth

September 12, 2016 – Toronto, Ontario – Department of Finance Canada

Canada is one of the first countries in the world to put into practice the notion that when you have an economy that works for the middle class, you have a country that works for everyone. Our ambitious plan to revitalize the economy, spur long-term growth and strengthen the middle class is increasingly seen by international partners as a model for shared prosperity and inclusive growth.

Speaking at the Toronto Global Forum alongside the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, Finance Minister Bill Morneau today discussed global economic developments and the leadership role Canada is playing around the world in promoting trade and investment as a means of creating shared, inclusive growth that benefits the middle class, and helps those working hard to join it. This discussion was moderated by Darryl White, Chief Executive Officer of BMO Capital Markets.

Building on the momentum of the latest G20 Leaders’ Summit and an historic visit to China, the Minister also reaffirmed the importance of ongoing engagement with Asian countries in order to create new opportunities for Canadian businesses now, and to secure our place in the global economy of tomorrow.

The Toronto Global Forum is an international conference fostering dialogue on national and global issues. It is held under the auspices of the International Economic Forum of the Americas, which organizes annual summits that bring together heads of states, central bank governors, ministers and global economic decision makers. The Forum also offers opportunities for business meetings aimed at promoting partnerships among Canadian and international companies.
