Archived - Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance Announces Closing of 2017 Pre-Budget Consultations
December 16, 2016 – Ottawa, Ontario – Department of Finance Canada
The Government of Canada understands that the right decisions must be made today to deliver a brighter and more prosperous future for the middle class, and those working to join it. The Government's pre-budget consultations over the past three months have helped to hone measures for Budget 2017 to ensure they reflect the views of Canadians and their hope for the future.
As part of pre-budget consultations, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance François-Philippe Champagne today met with students from Glebe Collegiate Institute who were participating in CIVIX's Student Budget Consultation. CIVIX is a national non-partisan charity focused on building citizenship skills and habits among young Canadians. Their Student Budget Consultation, which launched in November, provides high school students the opportunity to learn about and contribute to the pre-budget consultation process.
During this consultation, Parliamentary Secretary Champagne announced the conclusion of the Government's pre-budget consultations to solicit Canadians' views on how best to support a strong and confident middle class. The Government will continue to accept submissions until 11:59 p.m. (PST) on December 19. Closing the pre-budget consultation period now will allow for the ideas received to be considered as part of the budget development process.
The Parliamentary Secretary and Finance Minister Bill Morneau have hosted a series of pre-budget consultations across Canada since September. In all, the Minister and the Parliamentary Secretary visited 14 cities, while Members of Parliament from across Canada also held pre-budget consultations within their communities in an effort to engage Canadians in the lead-up to Budget 2017.
The Parliamentary Secretary thanked Canadians for their active participation during the pre-budget consultations. Launched on September 26, 2016, the online consultation website has already received a record 29,229 official online submissions and ideas from individuals and groups.
Canadians are encouraged to continue this dialogue by sending their comments and ideas online and via Twitter, using the hashtag #Budget2017, until the online consultations close at 11:59 p.m. (PST) on December 19.
