Budget 2017 helps build a strong Middle Class in Corner Brook

Budget 2017 is the next step in the Government's long-term plan to create jobs and strengthen the middle class. Canada is home to a well-educated and highly skilled workforce, but as the demands of the workplace change, so too must the education and skills that workers bring to their jobs. The changes in the economy—both here at home and around the world—present incredible opportunities for the middle class and those working hard to join it.
With its strong focus on innovation, skills, partnerships and fairness, Budget 2017 takes the next steps in securing a more prosperous future for all Canadians.
Today, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance Ginette Petitpas Taylor was joined by Gudie Hutchings, the Member of Parliament for Long Range Mountains, in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador to highlight measures in Budget 2017 that will help support women and address gender-based violence. The Parliamentary Secretary met with members of the Corner Brook Status of Women Council prior to touring the Corner Brook Women's Centre where she spoke about how the Government is taking an important step towards gender equality with Budget 2017, Canada's first federal budget ever to include a Gender Statement. The Gender Statement will serve as a basis for ongoing, open and transparent discussions about the role gender and other intersecting identities play in policy development and its outcomes.
Later today, Parliamentary Secretary Petitpas Taylor will meet with local mayors to discuss Budget 2017 investments that will most benefit their communities, such as those in infrastructure, early learning, child care, and affordable housing.

Budget 2017 supports Corner Brook and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador:

As committed to in an offer by the Government of Canada, Budget 2017 proposes to invest $6 billion over 10 years for home care, and $5 billion over 10 years to support mental health initiatives in provinces and territories that have accepted this federal offer. Of this funding, the federal government will provide Newfoundland and Labrador with an additional $160.7 million:

$87.7 million for better home care including addressing critical home care infrastructure requirements; and

$73.0 million in support of mental health initiatives.

Budget 2017 proposes to invest $100.9 million over five years, starting in 2017–18, and $20.7 million per year thereafter, to establish a National Strategy to Address Gender-Based Violence. The Strategy will create a centre of excellence within Status of Women Canada, to better align existing resources to address gender-based violence, and include measures that will be implemented by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Department of National Defence.

Budget 2017 proposes to provide up to $445.3 million including existing resources, over three years, starting in 2017-18, on a cash basis, to Marine Atlantic Inc. to support its continued operations.

Budget 2017 proposes to provide $5 million in 2017-18 to Fisheries and Oceans Canada to support the Small Craft Harbours Program.

Budget 2017 proposes to provide $250 million over five years, and $62.2 million ongoing, to Fisheries and Oceans Canada to renew and expand the successful Pacific and Atlantic integrated commercial fisheries initiatives and to augment Indigenous collaborative management programming.

The implementation of the new Canada Caregiver Credit would provide $11.9 million in additional tax relief to taxpayers in Newfoundland and Labrador over the 2016-17 to 2021-22 period.
