Minister Morneau and Minister Jordan Statement on Rural Broadband Investment

News release

February 7, 2019 – Ottawa, Ontario – Department of Finance Canada

Today, Minister of Finance Bill Morneau and Minister of Rural Economic Development Bernadette Jordan issued the following statement regarding Bell Canada's announcement of a major investment in its Wireless Home Internet service:

"The reality is that Canadians need reliable, affordable high-speed internet if they want a fair shot at succeeding and innovating in today's economy. Too many Canadians, especially those living in rural and remote communities, don't have that access.

"We congratulate Bell Canada for this important investment, bringing high-speed broadband internet to more than 1.2 million rural and remote Canadian homes. This investment is supported by our Government's Accelerated Investment Incentive. The Incentive, announced during our recent Fall Economic Statement, is part of a series of important and immediate changes to Canada's tax system. These changes were designed to encourage exactly this type of investment.

"Bringing high-speed connectivity to rural and remote communities, and encouraging business investment, are core parts of our overall plan to create jobs, and support the middle class and those working to join it."
