News release

February 10, 2020 - Regina, Saskatchewan - Department of Finance Canada

A strong economy starts with a strong middle class and a responsible fiscal plan. For the last four years, investments in people and communities, combined with the hard work of Canadians, have helped create more than a million new jobs—driving continued economic growth and creating more opportunities for people to succeed.

Today, the Honourable Mona Fortier, Minister of Middle Class Prosperity and Associate Minister of Finance, was in Regina, Saskatchewan, to continue the Government of Canada’s consultations for Budget 2020. Minister Fortier took part in a roundtable discussion hosted by the North Central Community Association to hear from local community and business leaders and stakeholders about how the government can help build a strong economy that works for everyone.

This year’s consultations focus on the priorities laid out in the 2019 Speech from the Throne:

  • Strengthening the middle class and growing the economy
  • Fighting and preparing for climate change and protecting the environment
  • Keeping Canadians safe and healthy
  • Continuing the work towards reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples

The Minister also spent some time with Grade 8 students at École Harbour Landing Elementary School to hear their thoughts on where the government should focus its efforts. This event was organized by CIVIX as part of the Student Budget Consultation program, a financial literacy and civic education initiative. CIVIX is a non-partisan, national registered charity dedicated to building the skills and habits of active and engaged citizenship among young Canadians.

Minister Fortier invites all Canadians to share their priorities on how the government can continue to invest in middle class Canadians. People can contribute their ideas by making submissions through the Your Budget website.

Quotes

“Our government knows that by investing in the middle class, we are building an economy that works for everyone. That is why we are engaging directly with Canadians from across the country during the budgetary process to better understand what matters to them most. Meeting with community leaders and young Canadians in places like Regina allows us to hear about what their priorities and concerns are, and what we can focus on to build a stronger, healthier, more prosperous life for Canadians.”
