Ottawa, Ontario - January 29, 2021

Today the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, spoke with the newly-appointed United States Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen.

The counterparts, who are the first women to serve as Finance Minister and Treasury Secretary in their respective countries, reaffirmed the deep, long-standing friendship between Canada and the United States.

Their discussion covered a range of topics, including the importance of working together to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and, once it is over, ensuring a strong, sustainable, and inclusive economic recovery that creates good jobs, reduces inequality, and strengthens the middle class. The two referenced the importance of early learning and child care as a part of economic recovery.

They also discussed the importance of fair international digital taxation, continued cross-border trade, and collective, bold action on climate change.

They agreed that with interest rates at an all-time low, now is the time to support those hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, create jobs, and prevent further economic harm to businesses and the workers they employ.

The Deputy Prime Minister outlined her concerns about the “Buy American” policy and stressed the deeply integrated, interdependent nature of North American supply chains that benefit both countries.

The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the importance of energy workers to Canada’s economy and reiterated Canada’s disappointment with the cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline.

The Deputy Prime Minister and the Secretary committed to continue collaborating on these and other important priorities and agreed to keep open lines of communication.
