Government of Canada announces judicial appointments in the province of Ontario

October 20, 2016 – Ottawa, Ontario – Department of Justice Canada

The Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Gary T. Trotter, a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto, is appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal for Ontario to replace Madam Justice J.M. Simmons, who elected supernumerary status effective April 22, 2016.

The Honourable James R.H. Turnbull, the Regional Senior Judge for the Central South Region of the Superior Court of Justice, is transferred back to the regular complement in Hamilton to replace Mr. Justice H. Arrell, who has been appointed Regional Senior Judge for the Central South Region.

The Honourable Harrison Arrell, a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Hamilton, is appointed Regional Senior Judge for the Central South Region to replace Mr. Justice J.R.H. Turnbull.

Peter J. Cavanagh, a senior partner with Dentons Canada LLP in Toronto, is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto to replace Madam Justice S. Himel, who elected supernumerary status effective November 20, 2015.

Tracy Engelking, a senior counsel with the Children’s Aid Society in Ottawa, is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice and a member of the Family Court in Ottawa to replace Madam Justice J.A. Blishen, who elected supernumerary status effective March 17, 2016.

Jasmine T. Akbarali, a partner with Lerners LLP in Toronto, is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto to replace Mr. Justice D.J. Stinson, who elected supernumerary status effective May 2, 2016.

Joseph Di Luca, a partner with Di Luca Dann LLP in Toronto, is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Newmarket to replace Mr. Justice R.G.S. Del Frate (Sudbury), who elected supernumerary status effective January 17, 2015; the vacancy was transferred by the Chief Justice to Newmarket effective August 18, 2016.

Lene Madsen, principal mediator with Bluewater Mediation in London, is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice and a member of the Family Court in Hamilton to replace Madam Justice M.J. McLaren, who elected supernumerary status effective August 3, 2016.

These appointments are effective immediately.
