3 CDSB Edmonton hosts Canada West regional soccer tournament

There was a little bit of home‑field magic on display on Aug. 19 as the 3rd Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton soccer team earned some payback against Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt to take home the Canada West regional soccer title.
Playing against the team that beat them in the tournament’s opening match five days earlier, Edmonton saw out a nervy 1‑1 draw through 120 minutes before winning the penalty shootout 4‑3 to book their spot at the national tournament in September in Kingston, Ont.
The regional soccer tournament featured five men’s teams, representing Edmonton, Esquimalt, 17 Wing Winnipeg, 15 Wing Moose Jaw and 19 Wing Comox. In addition, there was also a women’s regional development camp with women coming from all over Western Canada to train in preparation for their national tournament, also in Kingston.

Both the men’s and women’s national tournaments will take place from Sept. 26 to Oct. 1.
At the conclusion of the men’s round robin, and once the playoff bracket had been set, the women in the development camp had a chance to play a game against Winnipeg, who had finished out of the playoffs.
