Ex WARFIGHTER 2022 puts Reservist MPs to the test

August 29, 2022 - Tim Bryant, Western Sentinel

Thirty-four members of the Army Military Police Group Primary Reserves (AMP Gp PRes) spent nearly a month at 3rd Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton Detachment Wainwright from July to August earning their red berets as part of Exercise WARFIGHTER 2022.

Ex WARFIGHTER took place from July 18 to Aug. 13, and was designed to provide training for entry‑level AMP Gp Primary Reservists in order to qualify them as Military Police (MP) field support experts.

The training the Reservists underwent included treatment of prisoners of war, mobility support, security and force protection. In addition, the Reservists improved their familiarity with traffic control; vehicle and personnel checkpoints; vital point security; route, area and site reconnaissance; detainee and prisoner of war operations; and physical security operations.

“They were exposed to real‑life scenarios for both mobility and detention operations,” explained Major Jeremy Smith, Commanding Officer 1 MP Regiment.

During the exercise, the Reservists were tested both in the field and in the classroom, explained Commander Karen Topham, AMP Gp Acting Provost Marshal.

“During Ex WARFIGHTER, AMP Gp PRes members were exposed to real-life scenarios for both mobility and detention operations, which will set the conditions for these members to reintegrate back within their units across Canada and further strengthen our operational command relationship with the Canadian Army,” stated Cdr Topham.

Successful completion of Ex WARFIGHTER would earn the Reservists their entry‑level field training qualification and grant them their red berets as qualified PRes MP Members.

By completing the course and earning their red berets, the AMP Gp PRes members earn the right to be involved in both domestic and expeditionary – i.e. international – operations.

On domestic operations, the AMP Gp PRes members act to support the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in assisting provincial governments with natural disasters or other requests for assistance, such as the ongoing COVID‑19 pandemic.

When participating in expeditionary operations, the AMP Gp PRes members support the deployed Regular Force Field MP members. This relationship has been successful in myriad theatres around the globe, including in Afghanistan and on Operation REASSURANCE and Op UNIFIER.

AMP Gp PRes members are professional and well trained, and are held to the highest standards. They are accountable to the CAF and the public as they conduct their duties with diligence, integrity and transparency.

AMP Gp PRes members are a diverse group of Canadians, ranging from recent high school graduates to men and women with careers looking for a way to serve their country. Like many Reservists, they serve one night a week and one weekend a month.
