S1 MacLellan: I’m Sailor 1st Class Candace MacLellan, and I’m a Naval Combat Information Operator on board HMCS Shawinigan currently deployed Operation REASSURANCE with Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1, and this is the 60 second challenge.

S1 MacLellan: 60 seconds starts now.

What made you choose the RCN when joining the CAF?

I’ve always had a fascination with the ocean and a sense of adventure.

Taylor or Dua Lipa?

My best friend’s going to hate me for this. Definitely Dua Lipa.

How does it feel to be deployed on Op REASSURANCE in the year of NATO 75?

Feels great to be a part of something bigger than myself and something that’s been ongoing for three quarters of a century.

What would you tell someone thinking of joining the RCN?

I would say, if you want to try something new and you like adventure and want to travel the world, what are you waiting for?

What is your favourite part of being at sea?

No two days at sea are the same, there’s always a new view from my office, and there’s never a dull moment.

Where are you right now?

I’m in Rostock, Germany meeting my counterparts before we commence our mine hunting mission.

If you didn’t have to sleep, how would you spend the extra time?

I would spend it in the Junior Ranks Mess playing PlayStation.

What is the goal of Op REASSURANCE?

Op REASSURANCE is the largest overseas CAF initiative, and our commitment to NATO’s deterrence and defence measures in central and eastern Europe.

And that’s all the questions!
