My name is Wesley Aucoin. I'm a corporal and I’m a firefighter in the Air Force. Firefighting is very unpredictable. You’re there for someone's worst day, usually, so you kind of have to be ready for anything.
CISM, I actually did not know about it until I joined the CAF. I was like, wow, that’s cool. I love this country. Wearing that maple leaf on my chest and representing Canada overseas is something really cool. At the Military World Games, it was like the Olympics. Pro athletes from all over the world. There were 110 countries there, competing. Being team MVP was something special for me, and it was cool. It was emotional.

We all come from different backgrounds, different trades. We try to keep in touch as much as possible so we keep that cohesion. Firefighting, like I said, is a unique trade. It requires a lot of critical thinking, being quick on your feet, just like sports, just like soccer. I mean, every day that I work, not knowing what’s going to happen, it's the same thing when I go on the pitch, not knowing what's going to happen. It kind of improves my abilities in both.
A lot of athletes that I know of try to join the pro levels, and sometimes it doesn't really go their way. This is just another great avenue to play at that high level, and play against pros around the world. And having a job at the same time is just the cherry on top.
