Hey, I'm Petty Officer 2nd class Cronin and I'm going to do a functional check on the 57 millimeter with a Sailor 1st Class Levy. Come on with me and I'll show you how it's done. So this gun is got some special ammunition to it. So as they fire, they tell the bullet how they want it to act. So for example, it can— the bullet can explode and it releases a bunch of small little pieces of metal that fly all over the place. So what they do is they create a blanket effect and it'll take down a missile.
We're about to perform a functional check on the loading system to ensure that the ammunition is safe to be embarked into the gun.
We're going to bring the... the weapon system up to 77 degrees, so that will enable the system to transfer rounds from the magazine below into the gun firing system. We're going to watch the cassette move over, that's going to allow rounds to come up into the magazine. And then we're going to check the system's ability to transfer rounds between the different magazines and cassettes.
The systems now going to cock the barrel and cock the ramps so that we can ensure that the weapon is ready to fire.
It provides us with an extremely reliable ability to defend ourselves.
Every time that the guns shoot, and I hear that bang, it makes me feel great because I know I did my job right.
