Hi everyone,

My name is Major Jill.

And these are my friends Pilot Dan.

Hello.

And Private Ann.

Hi.

We work for the military.

Do you know what that means?

Go ahead, shout it out.

Great job everyone. Those were great answers.

We wear uniforms, and we work really hard to keep you and all of Canada safe.

The Navy sails at sea.

The Army marches on the ground.

And the Air Force flies in the skies.

You might have seen people like me in movies or TV… Sailing in really big ships, or driving tanks, or flying planes…

Maybe you have seen us in your town.

We help out during floods, and fires, and ice storms.

And we’ve been helping people during the pandemic as well.

Did you know that sometimes the military also helps other countries?

Really?

We do! We’ve worked in different places all over the world.

So you see, we do a lot of different things in the military.

So now I want to talk to you about Veterans’ Week and to tell you a story about an amazing hero.

Do you know what Veterans’ Week is?

It’s a time for us to remember the past. And it’s a time for us to think about the people who have done a lot to protect us.

Veterans are a really special group of people who were part of the military.
In the past, there were really big fights around the world.

Some countries were being bullies. They hurt people, and made the world dangerous.

It was scary and hard. But there were brave people who fought to make the world safer.

They helped to keep people free.

And we don’t do it alone.

There have been a lot of really brave animals who have helped out as well. So let Private Ann tell you a story of one of them.

His name is Gander! He was a really big dog who grew up in Newfoundland. He loved playing with kids and watching the big planes in the air at the airport.

Gander was huge and his family knew that he was special.

They knew that he could help out the military.

So Gander joined a new family: the Royal Rifles of Canada.

He even became a Sergeant.

80 years ago, Gander went with the soldiers to Hong Kong to help defend it from attack.

He had a big loud bark, and he scared away the enemies. Gander was a very brave dog. One night in December, he saved seven people’s lives.

Gander even received a medal for his bravery.

Great job Private Ann!

So today, we also remember brave animals like Gander.

Wasn’t that a great story?

So you see, rur goal in the military is a world that is safe for everyone.

Where everyone is free to be themselves.

It isn’t always an easy job.

Sometimes people in the military get hurt, or pass away.

So today, we remember them.

We wear poppies. We read poems. We listen to stories. And we say thank you.

Your teacher probably has some activities for you to do. So please make sure to say thank you to them as well.

And thanks to all of you for listening today!

Kids like you are really special. You help to keep our history alive.

So if you see a Veteran, don’t be shy. Wave, say hi, and say thank you.

Let them know we remember.
