Every February, Canadians come together to honour Black History Month — a time to recognize the profound contributions Black Canadians have made to our country.

In 2026, we mark 30 years of celebrating Black History Month in Canada.

At National Defence, we honour the Black Canadians who have chosen a life of service — as sailors, soldiers, aviators, special forces members, and public servants — serving across the Canadian Armed Forces, the Defence Team, the Communications Security Establishment, and the Canadian Coast Guard.

In moments of crisis and uncertainty, they have stepped forward — deploying overseas to promote peace and stability and responding here at home when communities needed help the most.

Their stories are inseparable from Canada’s history.

From the very beginning, Black Canadians volunteered to defend this country in uniform.

People like Petty Officer William Hall, who in the 19th century became the first Black Canadian — and one of the first Canadians — to receive the Victoria Cross for extraordinary bravery. Today, his legacy lives on through HMCS William Hall, carrying his name into service once again.

During the First World War, more than a thousand Black Canadians served, even when their dedication was met with discrimination. The No. 2 Construction Battalion, laboured under harsh conditions — not because of a lack of courage, but because of a lack of opportunity.

Still, they served. And their perseverance helped open doors for future generations.

That legacy continues today — in every Black member of the Defence Team who serves, who leads, and who pushes our institution to be better, fairer, and stronger.

Black History Month is a moment to reflect — and to recommit — to building a Defence Team where everyone belongs.

To every Black member of the Defence Team: thank you.

Thank you for your service, your leadership, and the lasting difference you make for Canada.

Happy Black History Month.
