(FR)(SB) Dear members of the Defence Team, I’m Major-General Simon Bernard.

(FR)(ID) I’m Isabelle Desmartis, and we’re the Official Languages Co-Champions for the Defence Team.

(FR)(ID) One year ends and another begins!

(FR)(ID) The transfer of the Directorate of Official Languages within the Chief Professional Conduct and Culture group in 2022 demonstrates that the recognition of official languages is part of the culture change, fostering greater inclusion of all civilian and military personnel within DND and the CAF.

(EN)(SB) Over the next five years, our commitment to demonstrate the vitality and continual progress of the program, which promotes the language rights of the Defence Team, will be supported by the Official Languages Action Plan, which focuses on:

  • (EN)(SB) Advancing language inclusivity and promoting bilingualism as an important element of our organizational culture;
  • (EN)(SB) Providing more accessible resources outlining the rights and responsibilities of employees and supervisors;
  • (EN)(SB) Developing an official languages training program that promotes a better understanding of policies and available tools;
  • (EN)(ID) Establishing a stronger communications strategy in order to better inform and raise awareness among the Defence Team. To this end, a new visual identity has been developed for greater visibility and inclusive promotion;
  • (EN)(ID) And finally, publishing guidelines on the delivery of training and education in both official languages for CAF members and the linguistic designation of civilian and military positions.

(FR)(SB) These accomplishments show that we are moving in the right direction in the implementation of the DND strategy, which sets out the structure for greater compliance and consistency in the department’s official languages policies in accordance with legislation and Treasury Board directives.

(FR)(SB) My goal for 2023––my resolution for this year––is to influence leadership by sharing official languages awareness tools, listening to your feedback, communicating the importance of official languages within our institution and being a role model for official languages use.

(FR)(ID) This year, as co-champion, I will continue to support the important work undertaken by the Director of Official Languages, and I am committed to using and championing both official languages at the senior leadership level in a more systematic way. After all, leadership has to set the tone for official languages.

(EN)(ID) Happy New Year to all…

(EN)(SB) Happy New Year, everyone! See you soon!
