Defence Research and Development Canada is advancing science and technology to enable and inform Canadian Armed Forces operations in the Arctic, defend Canada, improve security and support NORAD modernization.

Extreme cold, vast geography, and remote locations challenge traditional technologies. Research is needed to adapt and develop solutions to the Arctic.

Our research is extending the range of early detection capabilities like over-the-horizon radar into the polar region, and other sensing capabilities.

We’re exploring how satellites in low earth orbit can connect to one another to enable fast, secure and reliable transfer of data, including in the Arctic.

Our research on human performance and protection in the Arctic includes preventing cold weather injuries and improving protective equipment for Canadian Armed Forces members in extreme cold.

We’re providing advice on advanced technologies for Arctic military operations, including improved mobility and Royal Canadian Navy fleet requirements.

Our research on Powering the North is focused on providing sustainable energy solutions for Arctic military operations, personnel, and infrastructure, including camp shelters and permanent structures. These energy-efficient solutions will mean less resupply trips and decreased greenhouse gas emissions.

We’re continuing to research the implication of climate change for military operations, including working with our Allies through the NATO Climate Change and Security Centre of Excellence.

And we’re developing the infrastructure and capabilities needed to continue this research into the future, including through our Arctic camp at Gascoyne Inlet in Nunavut.

DRDC works with partners in industry, academia, other government departments and international allies to support Arctic research.

We’re also working with Indigenous partners to have meaningful engagement and benefit from traditional knowledge in our Arctic research and development projects.

With multiple lines of effort, DRDC is providing the Canadian Armed Forces with the research and development it needs for its current and future Arctic operations.
