- MCpl Fabienne Ackaoui, Operating Room Technician
MCpl Fabienne Ackaoui: I’m Master Corporal Ackaoui. I’m an Operating Room Technician, so that means working closely with the surgeons in the operating room.
My day-to-day work as an OR Tech is really to maintain the equipment. So that’s surgical equipment, whether it’s the anesthesia machines or our surgical instruments. We also do all the sterilization in-house.
So, that’s specific to my job. And right now, I’m in charge of the MSRT, which is the Mobile Surgical and Resuscitation Team. It’s an even smaller mobile surgery team.
I love my work in the operating room, but I also really like being in charge of a team, and leading, demonstrating, and teaching. I love teaching. For sure, having troops to work with—well, that’s the part I like a lot in terms of personal development.
Petawawa, for me, has been one of the most beautiful bases for the family. I have three young children, and there’s beautiful scenery, hiking. We’re not in the middle of town, there’s no traffic, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy.
But not only that, there’s also a large francophone community. Once you get to know it, Petawawa is a military town. And there are a lot of Francophones—more than you might think.
