The Defence Team recognizes the National Day of Mourning on April 28

April 27, 2020 – Defence Stories

The National Day of Mourning, held annually in Canada on April 28, is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives, suffered injury or illness on the job or a work-related tragedy. We also honor the many families and friends who have been deeply affected by these tragedies. Every worker has the right to return home safe and sound at the end of each work day. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) hopes that the observance of this day is taken not only as a day to remember the dead and injured, but also a day to strive to prevent workplace deaths, illnesses and injuries. On April 28th the Canadian flag will fly at half-mast on Parliament Hill and on all federal government buildings. While the impact of COVID-19 on normal workplace operations limit options for gatherings, employers and workers are encouraged to observe the National Day of Mourning in a variety of ways such as lighting candles, laying wreaths, wearing commemorative pins, ribbons or black armbands, and pausing for a moment of silence at 11:00 a.m.
