Reach out and connect with friends during ‘June is Recreation Month’

June 1st, 2021 - Defence Stories

With physical distancing guidelines still in effect and COVID-19 fatigue being very much present in our day-to-day, participating in recreational activities can be challenging, yet beneficial. Even though we may be physically apart, by socializing with other members of the community virtually, we can still connect and thrive from the benefits of recreation.

According to Statistics Canada, almost 38 per cent of Canadians reported that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they experienced feelings of loneliness or isolation. We reached out to a few Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members to ask them what activities they are participating in (or looking forward to getting back into) and what advice they have for fellow CAF members to build connections.

“I participate in the Indoor Rock Climbing Club of Petawawa,” says Master Corporal Vivian Cho. “It’s a great way to socialize with like-minded individuals passionate about the sport and meet military and non-military folk.”

Rock climbing is a great recreational activity that challenges your body and mind. Climbing is on an individual level and the feeling of accomplishment is a great reason to come out and give it a try. Climbing is also an excellent group activity that encourages teamwork.

If a fellow CAF member is feeling isolated, she suggests “scheduling video calls with distant friends and family, hosting online game nights, and having a socially distanced backyard or park visit. Or if you live alone, building a safe social circle with one other household you trust.”

For Sub-Lieutenant Liam Cole, the Auto Hobby Club at CFB Esquimalt has been a nice pastime. “The club provides excellent service, with the ability to do both maintenance and upgrades on my vehicle at a reduced cost.”

The Auto Club Workshop is also a great place to hang out, where you’ll meet new people and learn about your car and others’ while regaling in stories of automotive adventures and mechanical mishaps.
