Celebrate the amazing women of DND/CAF this Women’s History Month
October 12, 2021 - Defence Stories
Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate the amazing women in the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), who have worked tirelessly to advance women’s rights and promote gender equality. During October, we will also celebrate International Day of the Girl Child on October 11, and Persons Day on October 18, which marks the 1929 historic ruling from Canada’s highest court of appeal to include women in the legal definition of the word “persons.”
This year’s theme, Women Making History Now, recognizes the women who are reaching new heights and making a lasting impact. Across Canada, women are making incredible contributions to end the COVID-19 pandemic and to advance reconciliation. As the Defence Champion for Women, I want to emphasize that women in Defence are recognized as national leaders who are spearheading Defence goals. They proudly serve Canada, fulfilling significant roles in the military and the public service, alike. Over the years, women in Defence have boldly challenged stereotypes and barriers in the workplace. Their determination, dedication and professionalism have driven positive change within the Defence Team, across Canadian society and around the world. This month is one to celebrate their accomplishments and to inspire women, and all Defence Team members, to continue reaching the highest levels in our organization.
We are fortunate to be part of an institution that is putting diversity and inclusion among its top priorities, and is working to ensuring that our women – civilian and military – have the support they need to excel. Civilian women are taking on more leadership roles within the Defence Team, and the CAF is working hard to increase representation of women across all trades and ranks as part of the work being done with Strong, Secure, Engaged. As we celebrate the contributions and commitment of all the women who make our country a better place, let’s not forget that there is still much more to be done to achieve gender equality and to make sure women feel included and valued. We all have a role to play in this endeavour, and it starts with supporting the women around us. All our contributions, big and small, at work and in our personal lives, can and will make a difference.
During the month of October, the Defence Team will be sharing stories of women innovators, leaders and catalysts for change who have shaped our institution and our society, and inspired the women of today. I invite you to reflect on their stories and consider how you can also inspire the generations to come.
I am proud that the Defence Team includes so many outstanding women who are continuing the legacy of our predecessors and truly making a difference in the lives of Canadians. Let’s continue to work together to build a Defence Team where all women can achieve their full potential as they make their mark in history.
Happy Women’s History Month 2021!
