Message from the Clerk on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great sadness that we learned yesterday of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Over more than 70 years as Sovereign of Canada, The Queen was a symbol of strength and determination. As a constant and reassuring presence, The Queen was present for our moments of great celebration and shared in our collective grief. As she said herself in the course of her last visit to Canada:

“During my lifetime, I have been a witness to this country for more than half its history since Confederation. I have watched with enormous admiration how Canada has grown and matured while remaining true to its history, its distinctive character and its values.”

I had the great honour to meet with Her Majesty during my time in London. I can think of no better role model for public service and dedication to duty.

As we mourn her passing, I encourage you to visit the commemorative website and to reflect on Her Majesty’s lifelong devotion to service and on how we can give of ourselves to our families, our communities and our country. There can be no greater legacy for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II than to inspire generations of Canadians to serve others.
