Respecting Choices Around Alcohol
The holiday season is a time for all of us to rest, reflect, socialize and enjoy ourselves – in the variety of ways each of us chooses. That’s why being mindful of respecting each other's choices is essential in creating an inclusive environment. Enjoying an alcoholic beverage can sometimes be part of, but not a mandatory aspect of, our traditions and celebrations.
We all have a responsibility to foster an environment where every individual feels welcome and valued both at work and at gatherings outside of work. This includes setting conditions where everyone feels a sense of belonging, and that their choices will be respected.
Enjoying each other's company while serving alcohol should remain fun for everyone. We know, however, that sexual and other forms of misconduct are more likely when alcohol is consumed to excess. This is why we encourage leaders to create a safe environment with their teams and colleagues whether you are organizing an event on Base, a Wing, or in private homes. Pressuring colleagues to consume alcohol is never ok, nor is it a good way to build strong teams.
