A message from the Clerk and Deputy Clerk for the Holidays

December 27, 2023 - Defence Stories

This time of year often brings on a sense of reflection – a time to remind ourselves how privileged we are to be part of a team of true professionals. And how our work has real, tangible outcomes that improve the lives of those we serve and secure a more prosperous future for our country.

Our work is important. You are important.

This past year was one of great change – something that is now the norm, not the exception.

The new year will bring new challenges, of course, but we know, just as you did this year, you will meet the challenges of 2024 with creativity, innovation, and dedication.

That is why it is our honour to lead this public service – you embody our core values: respect for democracy, respect for people, integrity, stewardship, and excellence.

As we step into 2024, let us remember to:

Hold fast to our sense of purpose. Change is inevitable, but our core values will guide us as we build a more resilient and sustainable world.

Know that our work matters. Public service is not easy. Our work is never done. The work of being a better institution is never over. But take a moment during this busy season to recognize the invaluable contribution you and your colleagues make as public servants.

Be kind to one another. This season’s best traditions are the ones that involve giving back to our communities, to each other – encourage the building of bridges that connect, instead of walls that divide.

Whatever traditions you are a part of this time of year, we hope you find time to relax and be with those you love. We invite you to watch a special holiday greeting from us in this video message.

Sincerely,

John Hannaford (he/him)
Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet

Nathalie G. Drouin, Ad. E. (she/her)
Deputy Clerk of the Privy Council and Associate Secretary to the Cabinet
