Mariam Saad

My name is Mariam Saad and I was born and raised in Ottawa. I am also of Lebanese descent, which is something I am quite proud of. Currently, I am pursuing a degree in Public Affairs and Policy Management, with a concentration in International Relations and Conflict, at Carleton University.

During my free time, I enjoy posting and contributing to various social media platforms where I share video essays and my perspectives on trending topics. I also volunteer with various clubs at Carleton, including Carleton’s Islamic relief and Political Science Society. As my area of study suggests, I am passionate about learning and researching other cultures. This learning has prompted me to add new countries and experiences to my bucket list!

In winter 2023, I joined the communications team at Departmental Litigation Oversight (DLO) through the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP). Created in 2020 as a special advisor to the Deputy Minister, DLO supports the Canadian Forces Legal Advisor, the Department of Justice, the Department of National Defence (DND), and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) by managing and coordinating activities related to complex litigation and ensuring compliance with settlements. For me, it is fascinating to see how project management supports these activities throughout the litigation cycle, from anticipation, litigation, settlement implementation, communications, compliance reports and lessons learned. It is also quite insightful to see how data analytics informs and contributes to these efforts.

My work within the DLO communications team has introduced me to various aspects and requirements of government communications. I contribute to environmental scans and assist with the development of monitoring and reporting tools. I also work on communications products and activities to inform and engage DLO staff on a range of topics, including diversity and inclusion, digital modernization, health and safety, and much more. This provides ample opportunity to apply my creativity and writing skills while also improving my communications skills in French given that we use both of Canada’s official languages.

Working at DLO has been rewarding in other unexpected ways. There is a certain level of trust and empowerment in our work environment which has nurtured my sense of responsibility and fulfilment. My team has also taught me about the power of collaboration and how far effective teamwork can take you.

Working as a student in DLO has provided me with valuable knowledge about litigation, project management and communications in a government setting while allowing me to apply and further develop my professional writing and analytical skills. This experience has also helped me understand the kind of work environment I thrive in. With the diverse skills I'm gathering, I can envision myself in the future contributing to strategic communications or even public policy in defence or international relations, leveraging technology and data to assist with decision making and implementation. I feel ready and quite excited to continue this journey!
