Message from the CDS and CAF CWO: 2024 National Veterans’ Week Speakers Program
September 25, 2024 - Defence Stories

Defence Team,
Veterans' Week, from November 5 to 11, is a time to raise awareness and appreciation for the contributions of our veterans and current service members. It is also a chance to inspire and educate our youth and the public about our values and our history.
As members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), you have a unique perspective and a wealth of knowledge that can enrich and enlighten our communities. We encourage you to participate in Veterans' Week activities and events, and to give presentations in schools, workplaces, and other community gatherings. By sharing your stories and insights, you can help foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the role and impact of our military, both past and present.
The National Veterans’ Week Speakers Program (NVWSP) provides us with that opportunity, and it is important now, more than ever, that we acknowledge our proud legacy and highlight the important work we do here at home and around the world. Some of the young Canadians you reach through this activity may be inspired to serve, the way you were once inspired.
As members of the CAF, you consistently respond to the call of duty demonstrating courage, resilience, and commitment, whether you have deployed on operations, support our allies and partners, or work in Canada or abroad fostering the readiness and effectiveness of our forces. Canadians need to hear those stories this Veterans’ Week.
Along with our retired counterparts, many of you have participated in the program in the past and, thanks to your contributions, we had the chance to connect with hundreds of thousands of Canadians each year, either virtually or in person, sharing our message of remembrance and building relationships with learning institutions and community organizations across Canada.
Giving a presentation during Veterans' Week is a rewarding and meaningful way to have a visible role in our local communities during this important time of year, especially as we look to grow the CAF. You are part of a proud legacy of military members who have defended our values, our freedoms, and our way of life for over a century.
As planning begins for fall activities, we’re asking senior leaders to make allowances for members who would like to participate in the NVWSP. We are also encouraging you to think about the potential impact that hearing a member’s story of remembrance might have on Canadians who are contemplating joining our ranks.
There is a significant demand for speakers, and it can’t succeed without the participation of current and former CAF members of all ranks.
For members who shared their story through the program in previous years, we thank you for your participation and encourage you to work with your chain of command and local representatives to get involved again this year. For those who have not yet had the opportunity, you are encouraged to take part in this important annual program.
A CDS Tasking Order, CANFORGEN (both accessible on the National Defence network) and Public Affairs Guidance are now available online.
