DM/CDS Message: Government Announces Major Increase in Defence Spending

June 9, 2025 - Defence Stories

Today, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the Government is rebuilding, rearming, and reinvesting in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with the largest generational investment in Canada’s defence spending.

We will be making foundational investments, expanding and enhancing existing and emerging military capabilities, strengthening Canada’s relationship with the defence industry, and diversifying our defence partnerships. This is an investment in defending Canada and Canadians, which is fundamental to the country’s continued prosperity and ability to act as a leader on the global stage.

Today’s announcement supports much of the strategic vision referenced in Our North, Strong and Free and North American Aerospace Defense Command modernization. Now, there’s more money to move them forward and get equipment into the hands of the CAF faster.

This funding will also help strengthen Canada’s economy by creating jobs in the defence sector and reinforcing its supply chains. We will also build a strategic relationship with the Canadian defence industry, which will benefit the Canadian economy. We’ll continue to build a strong foundation for the future, reinforcing Canada’s self-sufficiency, and keeping pace with allies and adversaries.

With this plan, we are confident that we are providing the CAF with the foundations it needs to be an agile, multi-purpose, combat-ready military, prepared to protect Canadian sovereignty, defend North America, and contribute to the security of allies and partners today and into the future.

Thank you all for your ongoing dedication to protecting Canada.
