Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa, Ontario is a place of solemn remembrance and a final resting ground for members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and veterans. Governor General Adrienne Clarkson established it as the National Military Cemetery of the Canadian Armed Forces on June 28, 2001. The cemetery honours the sacrifices of those who served in war, conflict, and peacekeeping.
On November 11, CAF members stood vigil while families gathered among the headstones. Lieutenant-Commander Haupi Tombing led those present in a thoughtful reflection, encouraging remembrance and appreciation during the ceremony. Wreaths were placed by representatives from the Government of Canada, the CAF, Veterans Affairs Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and others to honour service. Thousands of Canadians joined in remembering in person and via media coverage, sharing the ceremony with others across the country.
Each headstone at the cemetery reflects designs from the First and Second World Wars, symbolizing continuity and respect. The recently added columbarium provides a dignified resting place for cremated remains while maintaining the National Military Cemetery’s traditions of honour and service. Located on unceded Algonquin Anishinaabe land, the site honours those who have passed—whether during active service or after retiring honourably as veterans—providing a place of dignity and peace. Throughout the year, the National Military Cemetery hosts diverse commemorative events that honour service, sacrifice, and shared history, creating opportunities for reflection and connection among Canadians.
In June 2026, the cemetery will mark its 25th anniversary. This milestone highlights its role in preserving memory and fostering dialogue about service and peace. Alongside the National War Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in downtown Ottawa, the National Military Cemetery stands as a united tribute, preserving the memory of those who served. It offers a personal and enduring place of rest for those who sacrificed for Canada. In its quiet rows and solemn ceremonies, the cemetery reminds Canadians that remembrance is not a moment in time, but a lifelong duty carried forward by every Canadian.
