Canadian Armed Forces increases education expense reimbursement to up to 75 percent for Primary Reservists

The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) is increasing education funding for Primary Reserve members to cover up to 75 percent of eligible expenses starting August 1, 2026, further enabling officers and non-commissioned members to pursue academic and professional development while serving.

The enhanced Education Expense Reimbursement (EER) Program reduces financial barriers to post-secondary education for Primary Reservists, in line with the CAF’s ongoing commitment to supporting them in balancing the demands of their military service, education, and civilian careers while contributing to individual growth and professional development. These enhanced benefits also help attract and retain skilled Canadians in the Primary Reserve, strengthening the CAF’s ability to maintain a force capable and ready to meet the demands of the highly complex and rapidly evolving security environment.

What’s changed?

The EER Program – Primary Reserve now provides increased financial support for approved courses at recognized institutions:

Reimbursement rate: Increased from up to 50 percent to up to 75 percent of eligible expenses

Annual maximum: Increased from $2,000 to $7,500 per academic year

Lifetime maximum: Increased from $8,000 to $30,000.

If a member has already reached the former limit ($8,000) or claimed part of it, they can still access additional support through the new entitlement under the updated policy, up to a maximum career limit of $30,000.

These changes represent a significant increase in financial support available to members pursuing education and professional development opportunities.

Eligibility, Implementation, and Application Process

Eligible applicants include Primary Reserve officers and non-commissioned members who meet the program requirements established in Compensations and Benefits Instructions (CBI) 210.801 and successfully complete approved courses while serving. Only eligible expenses, also found at CBI 210.801, will be reimbursed.

The enhanced reimbursement rates will come into effect on August 1, 2026, and apply to courses that start in an academic year beginning on or after August 1, 2026. Claims must follow existing program guidelines and approval processes.
