Defence Team members honoured for excellence in communications

At the 2026 Government of Canada Communications Awards of Excellence ceremony, two Defence Team members from Assistant Deputy Minister (Public Affairs) were recognized for outstanding contributions to communications, demonstrating excellence, innovation, and leadership across the federal public service.
Corporal Félix Chagnon
With fewer than three years of service in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), Corporal (Cpl) Félix Chagnon of Canadian Armed Forces Combat Camera (CAFCC) received the Rising Star award for his exceptional teamwork, innovation, and sustained impact. His professionalism, creativity, and strong commitment to supporting others has quickly made him a trusted and valued member of his unit.
Cpl Chagnon has contributed to a wide range of operational activities, including Exercise KHAAN QUEST, Exercise STRIKING BAT, Exercise GLOBAL RESOLVE, Exercise NORTHERN CHALLENGE, and Battle of the Atlantic commemorations. He consistently demonstrates adaptability, initiative, and dedication to mission success, earning the respect of peers and supervisors.
A highly creative member, he enhanced processes and products through the design of unit graphics and challenge coins, production of high-quality imagery and video, and optimization of live-streaming capabilities. His technical expertise and attention to detail strengthen operational communications and audience engagement.
Cpl Chagnon is known for his strong team spirit, reliability, and professionalism. His support to unit events and morale initiatives contributes to cohesion and a positive workplace culture. Despite his short service, he demonstrates clear leadership potential and a strong commitment to continuous learning, making him a true Rising Star within the CAF.
Sonia Parent
During a period of significant change for the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), Sonia Parent’s leadership has been central to maintaining effective communications and team performance. In recognition of her contributions, she has been awarded the Exceptional Leadership Award.
Sonia provides clear direction and strategic vision, while fostering an inclusive and respectful work environment. Her proactive engagement with partners, including the Defence Team, has strengthened alignment and supported effective communication during organizational transformation.
A strong advocate for her team, Sonia prioritizes employee well-being and professional development, while maintaining a focus on operational excellence. She cultivates trust though mentorship, empowers her team, and encourages meaningful engagement with senior leadership.
The CCG’s ethos, Safety First, Service Always, is reflected in leaders like Sonia, who connects her team’s daily work to the organization’s broader mission.
