Emancipation Day is an opportunity for us to honour the resilience, perseverance, and enduring contributions of Black communities whose courage, leadership, and service have helped shape Canada and continue to strengthen our Defence Team.

The day commemorates the coming into force of the Slavery Abolition Act across the British Empire on August 1,1834, marking the legal abolition of slavery for millions of enslaved people of African descent.

Emancipation Day is not only a day of remembrance, but also a call to action. While we reflect on a defining moment in history, we also recognize that the legacy of slavery and systemic anti-Black racism continues to influence the lived experiences of many Canadians. Acknowledging this history is not about dwelling on the past, it is about understanding how it informs our present and inspires us to build a more equitable future.

We have continued to see meaningful progress across the Defence Team over the past year. Colleagues, leaders, Defence Advisory Groups, employee and member networks, and community partners have worked together to advance inclusion, foster respectful workplaces, and strengthen trust. Every conversation, every act of allyship, and every effort to remove barriers contributes to a stronger organization where every person is empowered to serve, lead, and succeed.

This year also marks an important milestone with the establishment of the External Ministerial Advisory Committee on Anti-Black Racism. Composed of distinguished leaders and experts from across Canada, the Committee will provide independent advice to the Minister of National Defence and senior leadership on addressing anti-Black racism and advancing lasting institutional change. This important initiative reflects our shared commitment to listening, learning, and uplifting the voices and experiences of Black communities to continue to inform meaningful action across the Defence Team. It also reinforces the enduring legacy of the No. 2 Construction Battalion by transforming remembrance into sustained progress for future generations.

As members of the Defence Team, we each have a role to play in creating a culture where dignity, respect, and inclusion are not aspirations, but everyday realities. This means continuing to learn, listening with empathy, challenging bias when we encounter it, and creating environments where every colleague feels a genuine sense of belonging. Our operational effectiveness depends on the strength that comes from diverse perspectives, mutual trust, and cohesive teams.

Together, through remembrance, learning, and action, we continue moving forward, building a Defence Team that reflects the very best of Canada and remains ready to serve with courage, integrity, and respect.
