Across the Defence Team, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month is a solemn moment of reflection. This year, as we mark the 95th anniversary of November 11 as a day of national remembrance, we are reminded of our shared responsibility to pause, reflect, and honour the service and sacrifice of those who came before us.

The National Veterans’ Week Speakers Program (NVWSP) is an important part of that tradition. Through the program, serving Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members connect with communities across Canada to recognize the courage and contributions of our veterans, honour their service, and strengthen the bond between Canadians and those in uniform.

Remembrance holds deep personal meaning for many. We remember friends, colleagues, and comrades with whom we have served. During Veterans’ Week (November 5–11), sharing the CAF’s history is more than a speaking opportunity; it is a meaningful responsibility.

Every CAF member has their own testimony on duty, service, and remembrance, and every story helps Canadians better understand those who serve. By speaking to Canadians about service, sacrifice, resilience, and remembrance, we help preserve the legacy of those who served before us and inspire those who will follow.

For us, remembrance is not abstract. In schools, workplaces, and community centres, our stories help Canadians better understand and appreciate the role and impact of our military, past and present. The stories we share can inspire tomorrow’s generation, helping young people and communities see remembrance not only as a moment in time, but as living connection to service and sacrifice.

Requests from schools and community organizations continue to show that Canadians want to hear directly from those who serve. With greater participation, we can build on that impact and ensure these conversations take place in more classrooms and communities during Veterans’ Week.

As we begin planning for the autumn, we ask leadership to encourage their members to participate in the NVWSP. The program’s success depends on CAF members of all ranks stepping forward to share their experiences so that communities across the country can continue to learn from those who serve.

To those who have shared their stories through the program before, thank you. We encourage you to participate again in 2026. To those who have not yet taken part, we invite you to consider the unique opportunity to share your story and help keep remembrance alive for future generations.
