The Air Marshal W.A. Bishop VC Memorial Trophy – first presented in 1988 to commemorate the late Air Marshal W.A. Bishop, VC – is presented by the RCAF Association “in recognition of outstanding and meritorious achievement in any field of aviation” (except air transportation or military search and rescue). Any citizen, group, or unit organization is eligible to be considered for the trophy.
408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron (THS) has been awarded the trophy for 2020 to recognize the tremendous efforts put forth by the unit to provide assistance to the RCMP on April 23, 2020. The unit aided in the rescue of an underage female allegedly being held against her will in a remote area of Saskatchewan that was virtually inaccessible by any other means.
“I couldn’t be more proud of those aircrew who flew the mission, the ground crews and operations personnel who fostered a speedy launch, and the entire squadron for ensuring that we had aircraft and crews ready to go on short notice all while in a tight COVID-19 lockdown posture,” said the then Commanding Officer of 408 THS Lieutenant-Colonel Dave Forbes. “This is a true testament to teamwork and what we can do, and frankly did throughout all of 2020, to ensure that we are always ready to serve the people of Canada.”
Due to COVID-19 protocols the trophy was unable to be presented until September 10th during an Honors and Awards parade at the 408 THS hangar. The award was received on behalf of the Squadron by LCol Jim Shewchuk, Commanding Officer of 408 THS.
408 THS has won this trophy once before in recognition of its efforts in December 2008 as the mounting unit for tactical aviation operations in Afghanistan.
