Members of the Canadian Armed Forces train for harsh and dangerous situations. However, there are moments where an individual goes above and beyond when faced with unexpected and perilous circumstances.
Master Corporal Kevin Smith of 22 Military Police Flight North Bay is one such individual. On July 17, 2000, then Master Seaman Smith, a member of the Malahat Volunteer Fire Department in Malahat, British Columbia, responded to a call for service of a transport truck having crashed into the mountain on the south-bound Trans Canada Highway.

First on the scene, Master Corporal Smith assessed the driver’s injuries and began life saving measures. An update revealed that the transport truck was carrying approximately 26,000 lbs of propane and the Fire Chief ordered all members of the Fire Department to immediately evacuate the scene and to turn back all approaching vehicles.
While redirecting traffic, Master Corporal Smith was struck by a non-compliant driver and was dragged a short distance down the highway before breaking free. He was checked out by attending paramedics and then remained on scene for the following 18 hours until the deceased driver could be recovered, and the highway re-opened.
