The RCAF’s Major Serge Faucher recently made his fifth appearance at the 2017 World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships, held from March 17 to 25 in Daegu, South Korea.
Major Faucher, who works at RCAF Headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario, competed in the M50 age group with a busy schedule of eight races in six days. Although jet-lagged, he posted good results in the 60-metre and 200-metre events, advancing to the semi-finals. As the week progressed, he made the finals in the 400-metre event, finishing 6th with an indoor personal best time of 54.90 sec.
Last on his schedule was the 4 x 200-metre relay. Major Faucher ran the third leg on the Canadian team, earning a silver medal with an M50 Canadian record of 1:37.72 minutes.
Major Faucher’s brother, Chief Warrant Officer Claude Faucher, from 14 Wing Greenwood, Nova Scotia’s 413 Transport and Rescue Squadron, competed as an M45 athlete in the 400-, 800-, and 1500-metre races. He ran well in all three events despite having been hampered by multiple injuries for the month before the event. Chief Warrant Officer Faucher made the finals in both the 800- and 1500-metre races with respective times of 2:13.11 min (7th place) and 4:44.51 min (8th place), and ran the 400-metre semi-final in 57.62 seconds (11th place).
World Masters Athletics is a non-profit international organization established in Sweden by the International Association of Athletics Federations in 1975, and is responsible for athletics competitions for athletes aged 35 years and older.
Fresh from their exploits in South Korea, the Faucher brothers can now turn their attention to the 2017 outdoor season scheduled to begin in June.
