Statement by Minister Sajjan on Canadian Armed Forces Day
Statement
June 5, 2016 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces
Defence Minister Harjit S. Sajjan today issued the following statement to mark Canadian Armed Forces Day:
“This year, for the first time, I am celebrating Canadian Armed Forces Day out of uniform. I was proud to serve in our military for over 20 years, and now I am honoured to serve as Minister of National Defence.
“Today marks an opportunity to thank the soldiers, sailors, and air personnel who stand ready to protect Canada and defend our freedom and values, at home and abroad. While we honour our armed forces personnel, let us not forget their family members, who make tremendous sacrifices to support their loved one who is a soldier or veteran.
“Those who wear the uniform and stand on guard for Canada are among our finest citizens. These are women and men who have volunteered for a life of service. As Canadians, we are fortunate to be able to count on our armed forces. We see their hard work, professionalism, and dedication on a daily basis, but especially during times of need. Residents of Northern Alberta saw this first hand in the armed forces’ quick response to the recent wildfires, and the world saw it with the CAF’s assistance to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees from Lebanon, Turkey, and Jordan to Canada.
“I am humbled by their sacrifice and dedication. My promise is to continue to ensure that they have the right equipment, resources, and support measures in place so that they can continue to serve Canada proudly.
“I encourage all Canadians to join me in sending a Bravo Zulu to those who serve Canada, and to take the time today to thank a member of the Canadian Armed Forces.”
