Statement by Minister Sajjan on National Public Service Week

“The theme of this year’s National Public Service Week is, ‘Proudly Serving Canadians.’ I can’t think of a better way to describe the civilian members who are such an important part of our National Defence team.

“Canadians rightly thank our women and men in uniform for their service on operations domestically and around the globe, but recognition should also be given to the committed, professional and hard-working public servants who serve as part of Canada’s Defence Team. Selflessness and duty are not terms exclusive to those who wear the uniform. Public servants and their families also make sacrifices to serve and help protect this country.

“As a former serving member of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), I know the valuable contribution our civilian members make to Canada’s defence. Complex operations such as the CAF’s assistance to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada, and our ongoing international missions in places such as Iraq and Ukraine, are built on a network of support provided by our public servants. Such efforts would not be possible without the talented civilians who procure equipment, develop technology, run facilities and provide critical support such as human resources and financial services. The Public Service is integral to keeping Canada’s military strong and ready.

“This National Public Service Week, I recognize the strength, commitment and innovation that public servants bring to defending Canadian values, interests and sovereignty. When it comes to Canada’s defence, I am proud to say civilian public servants work side by side with members of the Canadian Armed Forces, ‘Proudly Serving Canadians.’”
