Intelligence Soldiers Work Together in Exercise DARK RAVEN
News Release
September 5, 2016 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces
Approximately 20 soldiers from the Canadian Army Intelligence Regiment will participate alongside soldiers from the American, British, Australian, and New Zealand Armies (known as the ABCA coalition) during Exercise DARK RAVEN at the Burnham Military Camp in Christchurch, New Zealand, from September 5 to 15.
Exercise DARK RAVEN will focus on the interoperability of the ABCA coalition’s intelligence branches and technology.
This exercise will not only allow participants the opportunity to share best practices and procedures amongst the ABCA coalition writ-large, it will also provide a great venue for the Canadian Army to share knowledge and, through simulation, experiment with procedures within a joint multinational operational environment.

Quick Facts
- The ABCA coalition began shortly after World War II due to the close Allied cooperation during the war. The Plan to Effect Standardization was initiated in 1947 among the armies of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada and was called the “ABC Armies.” In 1963, the Australian Army joined the group and the following year the New Zealand Army was granted observer status, becoming a full-fledged member in 2006.
- Through activities like Exercise DARK RAVEN, ABCA armies are able to conduct a full spectrum of coalition land operations in a joint environment.
- Since its inception, the ABCA coalition has continuously evolved, particularly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in order for all five nations to achieve their security goals.
- The Canadian Army Intelligence Regiment is based in Kingston, Ontario. It provides highly trained personnel and ground intelligence enabling the Canadian Army and Canadian Armed Forces to meet operational and institutional requirements
