First annual Navy Bike Ride

News Release

May 20, 2017 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

The Royal Canadian Navy held its inaugural Navy Bike Ride today in the National Capital Region (NCR). Over 700 riders of all ages participated in the Navy Bike Ride in the NCR, and hundreds more have participated in shadow rides at Canadian Forces Bases and Naval Reserve Divisions across the country this spring.

The Navy Bike Ride’s aims are to promote physical fitness, connect with the local communities, and raise money for charity. The two chosen charities for the Navy Bike Ride are the Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund and Support our Troops.

Quotes

"Many sailors in the Royal Canadian Navy are avid cyclists and dedicated athletes. As we keep our naval ships in fighting shape, our sailors must also focus on their own physical fitness. The Navy Bike Ride is an opportunity to highlight that commitment to health and wellness and celebrate our sesquecentennial."

    — Vice-Admiral Ron Lloyd, Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy

“I am thrilled to have been involved in this event and could not be prouder of the men and women who helped make this event possible. That this event has been so well received in the community is humbling and I cannot wait to see this event grow in future years.”

    — Commander Gordon Roy, Director of the Navy Bike Ride
