Canadian Army personnel commence deployment to Latvia

6 June, 2017 – Edmonton, Alberta - National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Media are invited to attend the departure of approximately 100 Canadian Army soldiers deploying to Latvia, in support to Operation REASSURANCE on June 9, 2017. The soldiers, from 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, will form part of the enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battle Group.

This group will join an advance party of roughly 50 Canadian Army personnel already in Latvia, with additional personnel departing over the next week, completing the deployment of 450 Canadian Armed Forces personnel.

As part of NATO’s eFP, Canada is assuming a leadership role as one of four Framework Nations and will establish and lead a robust multination rotational NATO battle group in Latvia. Operation REASSURANCE refers to the military activities undertaken by the Canadian Armed Forces to support NATO assurance and deterrence measures through the provision of military capabilities for training, exercises, demonstrations, and assigned NATO tasks.

When: 3:15 p.m. MDT, June 9, 2017, for a 5 p.m. departure.

Where: Executive Flight Centre Terminal 4, Edmonton International Airport.
