Joint Personnel Support Unit welcomes new Commander

Brigadier-General Mark Misener assumed command today of the Joint Personnel Support Unit (JPSU) from Brigadier-General Shane Brennan during a ceremony at the Cartier Square Drill Hall in Ottawa. Lieutenant-General Charles Lamarre, Commander, Military Personnel Command, presided over the ceremony.

Brigadier-General Misener will continue to lead the transformation already underway at the JPSU. This restructuring effort is focused on providing fully engaged, personalized, and guided support to all transitioning Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members, with special care and attention being provided to those who are ill or injured, including individuals with psychological or critical stress injuries.

  • Brigadier-General Mark Misener is a highly respected and dedicated officer with more than 30 years of experience. He has served numerous overseas tours including deployments to Somalia, Kosovo, and Afghanistan and has most recently served as Commander of 4th Canadian Division Support Group in Petawawa. 

  • Brigadier-General Shane Brennan and his wife, Major-General Tammy Harris, are retiring from the CAF to spend more time with their family. The Forces thank both Brigadier-General Brennan and Major-General Harris for their combined total of more than 64 years of outstanding service to Canada.

  • As part of Canada’s new defence policy – Strong, Secure, Engaged – the JPSU and the CAF’s approach to transition are being reinvented to better provide members with professional and customized support. 

  • The JPSU structure was originally established in 2008 as a project to care for the influx of visibly ill and injured CAF members from operations in Afghanistan. Over time, the scope of programs, delivery of services, and nature of injuries treated has changed considerably. 

  • The JPSU and its 24 Integrated Personnel Support Centres and eight Satellite Sites currently provide services and support to more than 1400 members who are posted to the JPSU for a period of six months or more. In addition, the organization directly supports over 4400 walk-in clients on an annual basis.
