Statement from Defence Minister on Canada Day

Statements

July 1, 2017 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Defence Minister Harjit S. Sajjan issued the following statement on the occasion of Canada Day:

“Today the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces join Canadians across the country in celebrating Canada Day.

“Canada 150 marks an important milestone for our nation and provides a unique opportunity to strengthen our sense of what it means to be Canadian.

“This Canada Day, let us celebrate our shared Canadian identity and take pride in everything we have achieved together since Confederation. We also remember the sacrifice of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians on this, their Memorial Day.

“Across the country, the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces will celebrate Canada Day along with their fellow Canadians. I invite all Canadians to attend their local ceremonies and to meet the men and women who defend Canada on their behalf.

“In addition, more than 1,700 Canadian Armed Forces members deployed around the world will celebrate Canada Day away from their families. Our thoughts are with them, and with their loved ones, as they continue to stand for the values Canadians hold dear.

“We are proud to celebrate Canada Day; proud to serve our nation. On behalf of the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces, I wish all Canadians a happy Canada Day.”
