Canada’s new defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, states the Government of Canada’s commitment to providing the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces with the support they need, including modern facilities in which to work and train.

• This infrastructure project includes the construction of a new building for the 5e Régiment du génie de combat of more than 18 000 m2, the replacement of two shelters, the restitution of two buildings, and the demolition of another building. The project also includes the construction of a parking area and some public services.

• The building that will be replaced was constructed in 1971 and designed to accommodate 180 people. The staff has since grown to more than 500 people. 

• National Defence requires new infrastructure projects to meet industry-recognized standards, such as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification or equivalent. The new building will meet the criteria for LEED Silver certification and incorporate several green building concepts.

• As indicated in Canada’s defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, greening defence infrastructure will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the Department’s buildings and non-military vehicles by 40 percent (from 2005 levels) by 2030.  

• Through this infrastructure project, 5 RGC members will have more space to maintain and repair vehicles and store equipment. New classrooms, common areas, and administrative offices will also improve the day-to-day operations of 5 RGC

• Canada’s defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, provides for the modernization of all detection and neutralization capabilities for improvised explosive devices.
