Report on Compensation of Military Judges Released

The fifth quadrennial Military Judges Compensation Committee report is now available on the Department of National Defence website.

The Committee was established pursuant to the National Defence Act for the purpose of inquiring into the adequacy of the remuneration of military judges. In forming its recommendations, the Committee considered all relevant documentation and a public hearing was held in September 2018.

Under section 165.37(2) of the National Defence Act, the Minister of National Defence shall respond to the Committee’s report within six months of receiving it.

Quick facts

  • In conducting its inquiry, the Military Judges Compensation Committee considers:

    • the prevailing economic conditions in Canada, including the cost of living, and the overall economic and current financial position of the federal government;
    • the role of financial security of the judiciary in ensuring judicial independence;
    • the need to attract outstanding candidates to the judiciary; and
    • any other objective criteria that the committee considers relevant.
  • The members of Military Judges Compensation Committee are:

    • The Honourable Michel Bastarache, CC, QC, of Ottawa, Ontario;
    • The Honourable Jean-Louis Baudouin, OC, of Montreal, Quebec; and
    • Mr. James Edward Lockyer, ONB, CD, QC, of Moncton, New Brunswick.
