Canada’s Defence Team proudly celebrates Indigenous cultures during Indigenous Awareness Week

May 17, 2019 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Media are invited to attend an Indigenous Awareness Week commemorative event hosted by the Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces at the National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa. The festivities will explore the theme of “We are all treaty people / Honouring all my relations because intersectionality matters,” which invites members of the Defence Team to reflect on our roots and family lines, to take pride in all facets of our heritage, and remember that, together, we form a diverse community.

Where: Main concourse, National Defence Headquarters, 101 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa.

When: 9:45 a.m. to noon on May 22, 2019. Media are requested to arrive by 9:15 a.m. at the Mackenzie King Bridge entrance of National Defence headquarters to allow for sign-in and security escort.

What: A commemorative event, including addresses by Lieutenant-General Jean-Marc Lanthier, Commander, Canadian Army and Defence Team Champion for Indigenous Peoples, Senator Yvonne Boyer and actor and producer Jennifer Podemski as the keynote speakers. There will also be a display of artifacts, demonstrations of traditional artisanry, and samples of traditional Indigenous foods.
