Department of National Defence continues investment in the Health Care for Canadian Armed Forces Members
News release
October 23, 2020 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces
Canada’s defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, puts the people who serve in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) at the heart of everything we do. It is why the Government of Canada is ensuring Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members are well supported and resilient, both physically and psychologically.
As part of this commitment, the Department of National Defence has invested in a new deployable containerized computed tomography (CT) scanner. This new scanner will ensure that doctors from the Canadian Forces Health Services Group have the modern technology they need to effectively diagnose traumatic injuries and multiple medical conditions. The scanner also supports our commitment to providing modern, first-rate medical care to our members.
CT scanners are used to take multiple images of the body from different angles and can be used to examine internal injuries from trauma, diagnose diseases, or plan for medical treatments such as surgery. The scanner has been designed with rapid deployment in mind, providing hospital-standard information within a few hours. Without the need for specialized lifting equipment or time consuming calibration, it can be operated in a variety of environments, saving valuable time in critical situations.
The containerized CT scanner was delivered to CFB Halifax on June 19, 2020 and has been tested to ensure that it meets the needs of the CAF and its medical professionals. The equipment will be used in global deployments by the 1 Canadian Field Hospital and, when not deployed, will serve the military population located in Halifax and its surrounding bases. This contract, valued at $2.8 million including taxes, was awarded to Marshall Aerospace Canada Inc. of Ottawa, Ontario. This investment demonstrates our continued commitment to support local Canadian industry.
