Readout

January 11, 2022 – Ottawa, Ont. – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Defence Minister Anita Anand spoke yesterday with Trine Bramsen, Minister of Defence of Denmark, on several matters of mutual interest.

The ministers expressed a continued desire to build on the defence relationship between Canada and Denmark, both bilaterally and through North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

They also discussed their concerns with Russia’s recent aggressive and destabilizing actions in and around Ukraine. Both ministers condemned Russia’s actions, and underscored the need for Russia to de-escalate the situation and live up to its international commitments on transparency of military activities. Minister Anand affirmed that a coordinated approach among NATO allies and partners would demonstrate the collective resolve of the international community, and send a clear message to Russia that any military incursion in Ukraine would have severe consequences and costs.

The ministers expressed their appreciation for the longstanding cooperation between Canada and Denmark on Arctic issues, noting the importance of Arctic allies being united. Minister Anand also noted Canada’s proposal to establish and host a NATO Centre of Excellence on climate security was an indication of the recognition Canada places on continued cooperation in an increasingly accessible Arctic; Minister Bramsen noted Denmark’s full support for the initiative.

Both Minister Anand and Minister Bramsen indicated they looked forward to meeting in person when travel restrictions permitted, potentially at the next NATO Defence Ministers’ Meeting.
