NATO Contribution Program

Military Budget

National Defence (DND) contributes to the Canadian share of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO's) Military Budget, which is funded by all NATO members. The Budget funds the operating and maintenance costs of the NATO military structure and activities, including deployed operations.

Canada’s contributions to NATO help to ensure Canadian security. Further, through NATO, Canada has access to military equipment and infrastructure that Canada does not possess. Additionally, through NATO, Canada has access to strategic information, intelligence, capabilities, interoperability with allied forces and an equal voice in high-level decisions affecting Euro-Atlantic security and stability.

Security Investment Program

The NATO Security Investment Program (NSIP) is a program that is funded by NATO members. NATO uses this funding to pay for infrastructure, including:

DND contributes to the Canadian share of the NSIP. By investing in NATO, Canada has access to strategic information, intelligence, capabilities, interoperability with allied forces, and an equal voice in high-level decisions affecting Euro-Atlantic security and stability. It also includes a potential return on investment, as Canada can use some of the infrastructure, and Canadian companies can apply to work on some of the infrastructure projects.

Other Activities

NATO safeguards the freedom and security of all its members by political and military means in accordance with the North Atlantic Treaty and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

Canada’s contribution to NATO is part of DND’s mission to defend Canada and Canadian interests and values while contributing to international peace and security.

The NATO Other Activities program supports treaties and organizations, such as:

By investing in NATO, Canada has access to strategic information, the option to participate in exercises with allied forces, and an equal voice in high-level decisions affecting Euro-Atlantic security and stability. NATO is a cornerstone of Canada’s relations with Europe.
